Dortmund by road
Dortmund is the largest city in Germany’s Ruhr district, formerly the coal-mining, steel and heavy industrial heartland of the country. In World Cup terms it forms one of a cluster of 3 venues in relatively close proximity in the north west of the country - the other two being Gelsenkirchen, just 20 miles away, and Cologne, 60 miles down the road.
Driving to and from Dortmund to several of the other venues will therefore be quite manageable, while the trip to cities in the east and south (e.g. Berlin, Leipzig, Nuremberg and Munich) will be a much longer trek.
The German autobahn network criss-crosses the Ruhr district and provides excellent links to the other venues.
