Signal Iduna Park

Borussia Dortmund played their early games at the Weisse Wiese (White Meadow, now an open air swimming pool), before moving in 1937 to the Stadion Rote Erde (Red Earth Stadium). This football and athletics stadium (in the foreground right – click to enlarge) remained the football club’s home until the Westfalen Stadion was built next to it in time for the 1974 World Cup.

The Stadion Rote Erde is still used today for athletics meetings and by Dortmund’s amateur side. In the ground’s Bundesliga days the one 3,000-seater permanent stand was supplemented by a number of temporary wooden stands, which have since been taken down.

Since being built with a capacity of 54,000 the Westfalen Stadium (now Signal Iduna Park) has been systematically expended over the intervening years. The stands have increased in height and, most recently, all four corners were also filled in, creating the huge bowl that the stadium is today.

The metro (called the Stadtbahn in Dortmund) has a dedicated stop for the Westfalenhallen and – on match days – for the stadium. These are served by lines U42, U45 (from the railway station) and U46. See City centre to stadium and Dortmund by rail.

For BVB games match tickets are also valid for travel to and from the ground on local public transport. Expect the same to apply for the World Cup.
