Travelling to/around Stuttgart

Location map

Location
Stuttgart is located in the Federal State (Bundesland) of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. It is 200km (125 miles) from Frankfurt, 230km (145 miles) from Munich, and 210km (130 miles) from Nuremberg.

Travel by plane
The city has its own international airport, Stuttgart Airport (STR), the sixth busiest airport in Germany.

Travel by car
Stuttgart is served by the A8 Autobahn, which runs from Karlsruhe in the west to Munich over in the east, and by the A81, which runs south from Würzburg to Singen near the Swiss border. The drive from Karlsruhe on the A8 takes around an hour and 15 minutes, while driving down from Würzburg on the A81 will take you about 90 minutes.

Both the A8 and A81 are, of course, linked to the rest of the nationwide Autobahn network, enabling driving times from other German cities to Stuttgart of, for example, approximately those shown here:

Cologne: 3 hr 40 min
Freiburg: 2 hr 15 min
Augsburg: 1 hr 35 min
Dresden: 5 hr

If you're thinking of hiring a car, I'd try Avis, Budget or Europcar.

Travel by coach
FlixBus, Germany's leading long-distance coach travel company, operates services from both Stuttgart Airport and from next to Konrwestheim S-Bahn station, a 15-minute train ride from Stuttgart Hbf (main station). For travel times and fares (which can be very cheap) check out the FlixBus website

Travel by train
The main station in the city is Stuttgart Hbf (from which it takes about 20 minutes to the ground on public transport).

For information on the facilities available at the station (e.g. luggage lockers, hire cars, etc.), see the relevant page on bahnhof.de.

For information on Deutsche Bahn ticket offers, go to my Rail page.

For more on getting to the stadium, see the Neckarstadion page.

Travel by local public transport
The local bus and light rail (overground and underground) Stadt/S-Bahn service is run by VVS Stuttgart. Ticket and timetable information can be found in English on the VVS website.

Depending on the length of your planned stay in the area/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport not only in the Stuttgart area, but also throughout the country.
