Throughout that season the team played at the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Sportpark.
While at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei around 2,000 fans put in 140,000 hours of unpaid work.
The volunteers are now commemorated on the 'Stadionbauer' monument behind the terraces.
The name of every volunteer is enshrined on metal plaques.

Weihnachtssingen. On 23 December every year, nearly 30,000 members of the Union family gather to sing carols and club songs.
A tradition started by a handful of Union fans in 2003. Now copied by several other German clubs.
